North Grey wins the 2019 Peewee Prospects Cup

LETHBRIDGE - The Peewee Prospects Cup has a long trip home from Lethbridge, as North Grey skated to a 6-2 win over North Blue to claim the 2019 title.

North Grey went wire-to-wire as the top team of the tournament, finishing with a perfect 5-0 record.

It was the first win for Head Coach John Sexsmith, a long-time coach with the Team Alberta program.

Earlier in the day, Calgary Red took the B Final with a 3-1 win over Capital Green.

2019 Peewee Prospects Cup: Day Three Recap

LETHBRIDGE - Day Three of the 2019 Peewee Prospects Cup is in the books, and the Championship Final is set.

It will be an all-North battle for the Cup on Sunday, as North Grey and North Blue both punched their ticket to the Championship Final with 7-4 and 2-1 wins over Calgary Red and Capital Green, respectively.Calgary Red and Capital Green will meet in the B Final.

The B Final is set for Sunday at 9:00am, and the Championship Final will follow at 11:30am.

Later in the day, Calgary White defeated Capital Royal 5-2 in the C final, while South Yellow defeated South Black 4-2 in the D Final.

2019 Peewee Prospects Cup: Day Two Recap

LETHBRIDGE - Day two of the 2019 Peewee Prospects Cup saw round-robin play wrap up, with Calgary Red, Capital Green, North Blue and North Grey all earning spots in Saturday’s semi-finals.

North Grey won both its games on Friday to finish atop Pool A with a perfect 3-0 record, while Capital Green battled back to tie South Yellow 2-2, and then defeated Calgary White 5-3 to secure second place.

In Pool B action, North Blue beat South Black 4-1 to earn first place in Pool B, and Calgary Red scored a late goal to defeat Capital Royal 2-1.

North Grey will now face Calgary Red in the first semi-final game on Saturday at 11:30am, with Capital Green and North Blue going head-to-head in the second semi-final game at 2:00pm.

Calgary White and Capital Royal will meet in the C Final on Friday at 4:30pm, and South Black and South Yellow will play in the D final at 7:00pm.

The B Final is set for Sunday at 9:00am, and the Championship Final will follow at 11:30am.

2019 Peewee Prospects Cup: Day One Recap

LETHBRIDGE - After a busy opening day of the 2019 Peewee Prospects Cup, six games are in the books, with six of eight teams earning a point.

Calgary White and North Grey both sit atop Pool A after victories over South Yellow and Capital Green, respectively.

Pool B remains wide open after two games for each team, with all four earning at least one point. North Blue leads the way with three points following a 7-2 win over Capital Royal, and a 4-4 tie with Calgary Red.

Day two features six more games of round-robin play, with Calgary White and North Grey kicking things off at 9am.

Lethbridge set to welcome the 2019 Peewee Prospects Cup

LETHBRIDGE – The 2019 Peewee Prospects Cup is set to begin in Lethbridge, with 160 male athletes from across the province ready to take their first step in the Team Alberta program.

Eight teams are taking to the ice at the ATB Centre from Thursday to Sunday: Calgary Red, Calgary White, Capital Green, Capital Royal, North Blue, North Grey, South Black, and South Yellow.

The teams will play in a four-day, tournament-format competition. All games are free to attend.

"The Peewee Prospects Cup is an exciting time for these athletes, and their families, as it’s a significant step in their young hockey careers," said Dustin Moore, Coordinator of Team Alberta Male. "We’re looking forward to the level of talent we’re going to see on the ice, as well as the growth that will happen off the ice over the course of the tournament."

Round-robin play kicks off on Thursday with six games, and another six games on Friday. The top two teams in each pool after round-robin play will battle in the semi-finals on Saturday, with the C and D finals playing out later in the day. The tournament concludes on Sunday with the B Final at 9:00am, and the Championship Final at 11:30am.

2019 Peewee Prospects Cup rosters announced

RED DEER – The 160 players competing in the 2019 Peewee Prospects Cup in Lethbridge, May 8-12, have been selected by Hockey Alberta.

The Peewee Prospects Cup program is the first step of the Hockey Alberta Development program and is held in off years of the Alberta Winter Games. It provides second-year peewee athletes, coaches, trainers and administrators an opportunity to discover the qualities of competitive hockey in a well-organized regional camp and select team competition.

The players are divided into the eight teams who will take to the ice at the ATB Centre in Lethbridge. Twenty 2006-born players comprise each roster, along with volunteers serving as head coach, assistant coaches and director of operations.

Rosters were selected following four regional camps held April 12-14 in Calgary, Olds, Edmonton and Vegreville, with two teams formed from each camp.

"We were once again very impressed with the level of talent displayed at all four regional camps this past weekend," said Dustin Moore, Coordinator of Team Alberta Male. "We’re looking forward to seeing what the 160 athletes selected to play in the Peewee Prospects Cup will bring to the ice in Lethbridge in May."

The Peewee Prospects Cup is a four-day, tournament-format competition. Round-robin action begins on Thursday, May 9 with six games. There are six games on Friday and four on Saturday, with the finals set for Sunday. All games are open to the public, and are free to attend.

Peewee Prospects Cup staff announced

RED DEER - Hockey Alberta is pleased to announce the staff for each team competing in the 2019 Peewee Prospects Cup.

A director of operations, coach mentor, head coach, and two assistant coaches were selected for each of the eight teams.

The Peewee Prospects Cup is the beginning of the Hockey Alberta Development program and will be held in off years of the Alberta Winter Games.

The Peewee Prospects Cup provides second-year peewee athletes, coaches, trainers and administrators an opportunity to discover the qualities of competitive hockey in a well-organized regional camp and select team competition. Athletes eligible for the Hockey Alberta Peewee Prospects Cup are male athletes who were born in 2006, and must be registered with a Hockey Canada/Hockey Alberta program.

Peewee Prospects Cup returning to Lethbridge

RED DEER - Hockey Alberta is pleased to announce the 2019 Peewee Prospects Cup will take place in Lethbridge, May 8-12.

The 2017 edition of the tournament was played in Lethbridge as well. The 2019 event will be played at the ATB Centre.

"The 2017 Peewee Prospects Cup in Lethbridge could not have gone better, so we’re very excited to return in 2019," said Dustin Moore, Coordinator, Team Alberta Male. "When the opportunity came about to host the tournament there again, we immediately jumped on it."

Regional camps for the Peewee Prospects Cup are set for April 12-14 in Calgary, Olds, Edmonton and Vegreville.


About the Peewee Prospects Cup

The Peewee Prospects Cup runs every second year, alternating with the Alberta Winter Games.

The 2019 Peewee Prospects Cup features 2006-born male players, and begins with four regional camps in April, designed to allow athletes, coaches and trainers to show their skills and receive top-level instruction and evaluation. The top 40 athletes from each regional camp (two teams from each camp), six coaches, two coach mentors and two directors of operations will be selected to participate in the Hockey Alberta Peewee Prospects Cup competition.
